Over the past couple of days the team has been working very hard to meet our goal of creating an environment that we can walk around in by tomorrow. We have made so many strides. We have put our own custom parts including a desk and a pencil. We are now currently trying to get things to interact with each other. Harris built a house that looked very cozy and then proceeded to put the table we made inside the house. I then finished up a pencil and placed it on the table. (I was way to excited about that.) Anyways, we will update soon with more information about our environments we're making.

The HTC Vive has been fully operational for several weeks. We have all been in awe of this incredible technology. Our days have been filled with modelling 3D objects and crafting virtual environments. The goal we are moving towards is the completion of a classroom environment akin to our very own research laboratory, H003. Soon it will be possible to interact with objects in our virtual world. After all, what is learning without interactivity?
-Harris The base stations help the computer track our location in our virtual environment. Without them we would not be able to walk around! Whats VR without moving around? Boring!
-Bryan Today we got here at 8 AM! It was still quite weird and extremely exciting to get back to working with the Vive! Our goal today was to get a better understanding of how programming works within virtual reality using Unreal Editor 4. We had a blast! There was a big learning curve involved with getting used to the controls, but overall we were able to gain a basic understanding of how to manipulate "Actors," or objects, and change the textures as well. After spending every hour up until 12 working on Unreal Editor, we took a small break and opened up a game. Bryan had a scare when the floor boards started to fall from his feet and almost "fell." I laughed at the look on Bryan's face as he took off the headset. Though I had just as much of a scare when a goblin came crawling out from the storm drain below me. We also had tried out using audio with the headset. There was a significant difference in the experience. Getting yelled at by a robot and being called a bad piece of ham by a computer is really strange and funny! :P Overall, by 3:25, we found a good stopping point and had to pack up. What a successful day! Can't wait to get back to it tomorrow!
-Julia The computer is built and we set up the HTC Vive to experiment around with. VR is soooo cool!!!!! We are so excited to begin our research. We downloaded all the necessary software, and maybe a few games :). We downloaded steam VR and the Unreal Engine. Next meeting we will try to figure out how to get the Unreal Engine to run inside the VR headset. We are so excited!
Today we drove up to Microcenter and were able to purchase the computer parts and the HTC Vive. We will be setting them up on Friday!
At our second meeting we discussed some of the technical limitations we might encounter and brainstormed solutions. We also made sure we were keeping on our time table! This was our first official meeting together. We got together and had dinner together, then we got to work! We discussed ideas and solutions to problems that we were encountering and made a timetable to help ourselves get ready for the school year.
